Four men say they were victims of sexual abuse as teens at the Indian River Correctional Institution, a Florida youth prison. The four former juvenile offenders are suing the state, claiming that two female educators sexually abused them while incarcerated in 1999 and 2000. The former inmates are now 18 to 20 years old. They were minors at the time. The attorney who filed the federal lawsuit against the state Department of Corrections said that the department knew minors were being raped and tried to cover it up. Also named in the lawsuit are a former supervisor and a former teaching assistant at the Indian River Correctional Institution. Gary Gaylor is a former teacher at the prison who said he tipped off an attorney about the alleged abuse. Gaylor said he was fired after reporting that minors were being raped. He said he made that report right up to the top of the department. Gaylor has a lawsuit of his own claiming he was fired in violation of the Florida Whistleblower's Act. |
