A second inmate who escaped from the Oakdale prison in eastern Iowa turned himself in May 19 to the FBI in Atlanta, Georgia authorities said.
Omar Wilkins, 19, was being held in the Atlanta Pretrial Detention Center, said Special Agent Joe Parris, FBI spokesman. He was arraigned before a U.S. Magistrate May 20 on a federal carjacking charge.
Agents had been talking with family members and he was accompanied by some family members when he appeared at the office, said Larry Holmquist, spokesman for the FBIs Omaha, Neb., office.
Wilkins had just begun serving a life sentence on a first-degree murder conviction when he and Jeffrey Hershberger, 38, of Ottumwa, escaped from the Iowa Medical and Classification Center on April 12.
The pair made their getaway during an outdoor recreation period. They climbed two fences, carjacked a vehicle in the parking lot, then robbed a fisherman and stole his van, authorities have said.
A high-tech fence alarm at the medium-security prison had been disconnected as far back as October during construction of a special needs unit.
It could be weeks before Wilkins returns to Iowa. Hershberger was arrested in Georgia on April 18.
