A riot erupted Sunday at the Federal Penitentiary in Lompoc, California, and several inmates and officers were injured, authorities said. The cause of the riot wasn't immediately disclosed. Lompoc Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert Kovach said five people injured in the riot were transported to local hospitals. Four of the five were prison employees and a fifth was apparently an inmate, he said. Kovach said the fire department dispatched one fire engine to the prison for a medical emergency and three ambulances from a private company were also on the scene. He said there may have been additional injuries that he was unaware of, or prison employees who drove to local hospitals for treatment in private vehicles. KCOY-TV in Santa Maria reported that ambulances were called to the prison about 6 p.m. The station reported that four prison workers were taken to hospitals, along with two inmates. Authorities who earlier spoke on condition of anonymity said officers and inmates were taken to Marian and Lompoc Hospitals. The authorities said some of the injuries could be serious. Emergency room workers at Lompoc Hospital declined comment. An emergency room nurse at Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, about 30 miles north of Lompoc, said two officers were in stable condition there. Prison spokesman Joe Henderson did not return repeated telephone calls and messages. Spokespersons at the Police and Fire departments, and hospital workers, earlier told The Associated Press they were instructed by prison officials not to speak with reporters. |
