An inmate at Rikers Island was stabbed to death outside his cell on Saturday and two prisoners are being questioned in the fatal attack, the Department of Corrections said. John Smith, 35, was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital Saturday evening after being stabbed once in the chest in the Motchan Detention Center, one of 10 jails on Rikers. Smith entered jail at Rikers on April 13. He was serving a one-year sentence for petty larceny while awaiting trial on another petty larceny count. A 9-inch sharpened metal object, or 'shank,' was recovered at the attack scene. The weapon will be subjected to forensic tests to determine whether it was used in the murder, said Department of Corrections spokesman Tom Antenen. The homicide was the first at Rikers since 2001, when three murders occurred, Antenen said. |
