Utah's youngest prison inmate is getting a new trial. Brookes Colby Shumway became the Utah State Prison's youngest resident -- at age 16 -- when he was locked up for murder. He turns 18 next month, and he's headed for a new trial on the murder charge. His attorneys were in court yesterday, asking for more time to prepare their case. A scheduling hearing is now slated for early August. The Utah Supreme Court ruled that Shumway gets a new trial because the jury that convicted him got the wrong instructions regarding the lesser crime of manslaughter. Prosecutors say Shumway was just 15 when he killed a friend during a sleep-over by stabbing him 39 times. The dispute reportedly arose after a night of playing violent video games. |
