Authorities continue to hunt for Michelle Padilla, 27, and Kimberly Takata, 33, who escaped through a hole cut in the perimeter fence at the Oahu Community Correctional Center April 28. Authorities suspect the women were able to make it to the fence because several fights that broke out simultaneously in the women's module distracted the officers on duty. 'Possibly it was a diversionary tactic, maybe a portion of it was, a portion of it was not,' OCCC Warden Francis Sequeira said. During the fights, the two inmates escaped through the front door. They made their way to the chain-link fence, down the road to the side, to a break in a fence and on to the outside perimeter. They escaped through the hole and into a waiting Camaro. Police suspect the two people in the Camaro had cut the hole. Padilla has prior drug convictions, while Takata has prior theft convictions. Both were awaiting trial when they escaped. Their escape comes on the heels of the highly publicized esca The escape highlighted several weaknesses in the system. The tower fronting the women's module was not manned due to budget concerns. Officials said it will be manned from now. |
