Two convicted killers and another inmate escaped from a New Hampshire prison Wednesday by cutting through a fence topped by razor wire, a Corrections Department spokesman said. The escape happened about 10:20 a.m., Corrections Department spokesman Jeff Lyons said. The prison is on a busy, main street north of downtown and homes are nearby. Armed security officers were seen going door-to-door at homes and a police helicopter flew by. All three men were medium-security inmates, Lyons said, adding that it was the first escape from the medium-security area in at least 10 years. He said one of the escapees was convicted murderer Kevin Gil, 31, of Boston. He was sentenced in 2001 to 45 years to life after pleading guilty to stabbing another Massachusetts man to death in a Salem motel room in 2000. Lyons identified the other inmates as Philip J. Dick, 23, of Hampton, who was serving 15 to 30 years for homicide and weapons offenses, and Christopher McNeil, 35, of Willards, Md., who was imprisoned for parole violations on convictions on drug, forgery and possession of stolen property charges. Lyons said the three apparently cut through a fence in the industrial training area of the prison. The rest of the prison was locked down after the escape, he said. Inmates dress in green jumpsuits, but Lyons said they could have changed after escaping. Lyons said inmates have walked away from minimum security halfway houses. He said one inmate attempted to climb over the wire fence in early 1990s, but was cut up badly and caught. Two women escaped from the Laconia prison around Christmas 1999, but were caught. |
