A suspicious-looking Pringles potato chip can caused the evacuation of a building at the Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill, New York, Tuesday after authorities thought it might be a bomb. About 40 people were evacuated from an administrative building at the front of the facility about 12:30 p.m., Department of Correctional Services spokesman Mike Houston said. State police and a bomb technician were called to the scene, but only a small cell phone and cell phone recharger were found in the can. The tube, part of a larger package of food intended for an inmate, was being inspected as part of a routine check in the administrative building, Houston said. Prison officials decided to evacuate after noticing that ''the top foil had been tampered with ... basically had been opened and re-glued back,' he said. After a closer look, ''we were able to ascertain what appeared to be small wires inside the can,'' Houston said. Investigators and troopers from the Wappingers state police barracks responded, and several state police cruisers were seen at the front of the prison as administrative employees were kept out of the building until after 2:10 p.m. Trooper Scott Rifenburgh, a bomb technician, was called from the Claverack, Columbia County, substation to inspect the container. He found a cell phone and charger. ''We just felt it would be prudent to err on the side of caution,'' Houston said. He said the administrative building is detached from the inmate housing and inmates were not evacuated. Houston said inmates are not permitted to have cell phones inside the prison. Prisons officials are continuing their investigation. |
