Three inmates who escaped from the New Hampshire State Prison were caught late Thursday afternoon at a campground in Plymouth, Mass., Gov. Craig Benson said. Authorities said the men offered no resistance, and no one was hurt. The men included a convicted murderer and a man who tried to kill police officers seeking to arrest him. They cut through two prison fences at the state prison in Concord on Wednesday morning and fled. Investigators said the inmates had outside help that apparently provided clothes and transportation. 'It was part of a well thought-out plan,' state Attorney General Peter Heed said. Earlier Thursday, a man believed to have helped them had a gun and shot himself in the head when traced by police to a Salem motel early Thursday. The man, Shane Laslie of Concord, was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police never were able to question him. It wasn't immediately clear how Laslie, 26, came under suspicion. He was paroled from the prison in January 2002 on a cocaine possession conviction, said Jeff Lyons, Corrections Department spokesman. |
