A fifth member of a seven-man gang that escaped from a Texas prison was convicted Monday of murdering a police officer during a Christmas Eve 2000 robbery of a sporting goods store.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Randy Halprin, 25, in the slaying of officer Aubrey Hawkins, 29, who was shot 11 times and run over twice. Four of the escaped convicts have already been sentenced to death in the case.
Halprin and six other inmates escaped from prison on Dec. 13, 2000, and led authorities on a nationwide manhunt.
They are accused of stealing $70,000 and a large cache of weapons from the sporting goods store in Irving before their capture in Colorado nearly a month later. One escapee killed himself.
The last of the escaped convicts is expected to be tried later this year.
Halprin's attorney described his client as a naive young man who became a protege the gang's ringleader, George Rivas, as a way to survive while in prison.
