Saying they made a terrible mistake, California officials released an auto mechanic on Monday convicted of murder in 1991 after obtaining evidence someone else was the culprit.
'He was convicted in 1991 for a murder he did not commit,' Karyn Sinunu, assistant district attorney for Santa Clara County, told Reuters. 'In February we reopened the case.'
Rick Walker, 47, smiled broadly as he left a court a free man after a judge in San Jose south of San Francisco ordered his release. Citing his belief in God, Walker said: 'I'm not mad at anyone.'
Walker was convicted of murdering a former girlfriend with an accomplice named Rahsson Bowers, who testified against Walker a dozen years ago.
'We've never seen this happen before,' Sinunu said of Walker's release from prison on mistaken murder charges. She added he may receive compensation from the state.
The assistant district attorney said homicide detectives working on the case since February found scientific evidence another man, not Walker, was the other murderer. That man is now in custody, she said.
Newly freed, Walker said he was looking forward to spending his first evening back with his family and enjoying a good home-cooked meal.
