Weapons and drugs seized last month from Wabasha County Jail cells led authorities to believe inmates planned to escape and attack jail staff, Sheriff Rodney Bartsh said recently. A 'shakedown' of 13 cells May 23 yielded a trace amount of methamphetamine, a pipe rolled from a Trivial Pursuit game card, a piece of Plexiglass shaved into the shape of a key and two spoons filed down to knife points in a couple of the cells, Bartsh said. Tightly rolled magazines in the shape of a club also were recovered. 'We feel they were trying to escape,' he said. 'We didn't know when it was going to happen, but we do feel they were going to go after the staff.' Four or five inmates had been booked into the jail for manufacture of methamphetamine, Bartsh said. At least three inmates are believed to be involved in the alleged escape plot, but the exact number is unknown, said Mike Peterson, jail administrator. Fourteen inmates were being held the day of the search, he said. An investigation could result in criminal charges, including attempted escape from custody, drug possession and weapons-related counts, Bartsh said. The case has been referred to the county attorney. 'This was a real eye opener for our staff and our community,' Bartsh said. 'Times are changing, and we are changing with them.' Wabasha County Jail has 14 cells. Built in 1916, it is the second-oldest county jail in Minnesota. |
