A Wayne County, Tenn., prison inmate was sentenced recently to life in prison without the chance of parole for using a sock to strangle a fellow inmate. Charles Sanderson, 42, was found guilty June 2 of the July 11, 2001, killing of Tom Harris, 55. Both men were serving time in South Central Correctional Facility in Clifton, Tenn., at the time of the slaying, prosecutors said. A Maury County jury deliberated two hours before deciding against the death penalty, which the state was seeking. ''He'll be spending the rest of his life in the penitentiary,'' Circuit Judge Jim T. Hamilton said. The case was moved from Wayne County to Maury County for two reasons, Hamilton said. First, Corrections Corporation of America, the for-profit firm that operates the prison where the killing occurred, employs many people in that area, and second, no facility in Wayne County could accommodate a sequestered jury. Evidence presented during the sentencing phase of the trial included testimony that Sanderson, one of 11 children, was often beaten as a child by his father. A Nov. 10 trial date has been set for Sanderson's co-defendant, Joel Schmeidere, 23, for his alleged part in the killing, court officials said. |
