N.J., Prison Worker Settle Suit for $250,000

A female corrections officer at Riverfront State Prison has settled her sexual harassment and civil rights lawsuit against the state for $250,000.
The settlement was confirmed June 2 by attorney Frank Gaudio of Red Bank.
The lawsuit - filed by Marianne Jervis - was filled with allegations of obscene comments and unwanted physical contact inside the minimum-security jail in Camden.
Jervis claimed fellow jail officers Alonzo Piercy of Cherry Hill and Mikle Branch of Pennsauken undermined her authority in the jail.
The suit also claimed the defendants threatened at least once to leave Jervis unprotected during a lockdown.
Supervisors at the prison 'did nothing' when Jervis complained about the treatment she received, Gaudio said, essentially letting the incidents escalate.
Jervis at one point filed an assault charge against Piercy. He was convicted in municipal court of offensive touching, according to the civil lawsuit.
As part of the settlement, Jervis - who is in her late 40s - will be able to retire on a disability pension, Gaudio said.
