A solution has been found for inmate overcrowding in the Hood County jail in Texa, at least for now. Up to 24 minimum-risk male inmates can be moved to the nearby Hood County Regional Juvenile Detention, possibly by Jan. 1, says sheriff Allen Hardin. The Texas Jail Commission recently approved the plan. This will keep funds here that are now used to pay for inmates housed out of the county, said county commissioner Charles Baskett. He also said the arrangement would help defray some of the detention center's costs. The funds would be used to hire additional deputies to provide coverage for the adult prisoners and pay their food bill, said commissioner Matt Mills. Earlier this year, the jail was cited for overcrowding of female inmates. To correct the situation a number of male inmates were transferred to a facility in Haskell County. Hardin said he believes housing inmates at the center is a move in the right direction. "We'll house only minimum-risk inmates who are on work release. And the law says they must be totally segregated from the juveniles," said Hardin. The county hopes to eventually expand the jail to meet the increasing inmate population. Hardin said the juvenile center is already a secure building and only minor changes are expected to house the adults. Baskett noted the detention center lease states it can only be used to house juveniles and the county needed to get permission from the bondholders to make the change to house inmates. Rash assured him the bond company would be notified. |
