Illinois' new state budget includes about $1.5 million for settlements with inmates sent to prison on faulty convictions. That includes two former death row inmates pardoned by former Gov. George Ryan. The budget is still awaiting Gov. Rod Blagojevich's approval but it includes payouts of more than $100,000 each to several inmates found to be wrongfully convicted. For example, Rolando Cruz will be paid $120,300 and Aaron Patterson is due to receive $161,500. Under state law, anyone wrongly incarcerated and pardoned by the governor is eligible for a settlement. It's paid by the Court of Claims to compensate them for their time in prison. |
