One Prisoner Dead, One Injured in Canadian Prison Riot

One prisoner was killed and another injured in a riot at a federal maximum-security prison in the western province of British Columbia, a prison spokesman confirmed.
Some 90 inmates at a prison in Agassiz, British Columbia -- some 115 kilometers (72 miles) east of Vancouver -- came out of their cells Monday wearing masks to conceal their identity.
Security officers, suspecting something was up, retreated to a locked safety post as inmates took to smashing furniture, busting sprinkler heads and setting fires, said Dennis Finlay, a regional spokesman for Correctional Service of Canada.
Ninety minutes later, an emergency response team came in, released the officers and started getting the inmates back into their cells, Finlay said.
'We found one inmate had been killed, one other was injured and he is in stable condition now,' he said.
The victim, a 39-year-old male, 'looks as if he had been beaten and stabbed,' Finlay said. No prison staff had been seriously injured in the melee.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the riot. Officials believe the inmates were under the influence of homemade alcohol made from vegetables.
'We've had incidents in the past, where inmates have caused severe damage. But the rate of inmate murders is very low,' Finlay said, noting that last year there were two inmate murders in the western province.
