Texas Co. Jailer Indicted in Sexual Misconduct Case

The Lubbock County Grand Jury indicted county jailer Yolanda Barron on charges of violation of civil rights of a person in custody.
The 33-year-old is accused of having sexual relations with a female inmate for more than a year.
Investigators say the relationship began back in November 2001, shortly after Barron became a jailer. Sometime after the relationship ended, the two had a property dispute. That's when the victim's lawyer notified the sheriff's department.
'We're disappointed,' says Paul Scarborough, with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Department. 'We believe that people that come to work in these circumstances should know better through common sense, if not through training.'
Scarborough says all jailers are trained to know the laws and policies. One of those policies is that inmates don't have the right to consent, or refuse sexual relations. So they're at the mercy of the jailer.
'We always hate to indict out own people, but the sheriff is very consistent in saying as long as we operated within our guidelines and within the law, we are under the umbrella of his protection. But when we chose to live outside of those boundaries, there's penalties to pay,' says Scarborough.
Barron's been on paid administrative leave since last Thursday and she now faces losing her job as a jailer. The victim is out on parole.
