The state is investigating a North Carolina county sheriff who drew national attention for his pink jail cells and paramilitary-style uniforms, the State Bureau of Investigation said last week. The results of the investigation into Davidson County Sheriff Gerald Hege will be referred to District Attorney Garry Frank, who requested the probe, SBI special agent Frank Brown said. Frank would not describe the allegations against Hege, but he said the probe grew from an investigation of the county's public buildings and maintenance department director, Ron Richardson, who resigned Jan. 31 after the county government suspended him. No criminal charges have been filed in that investigation. 'I've been under investigation since the day I came into office,' Hege said in the June 11 editions of the Winston-Salem Journal. 'People make allegations and the district attorney ... has to follow through with them.' Last year, three of Hege's officers were sent to federal prison for their involvement in a drug ring. Hege narrowly won re-election to a third term in November. Hege's jail, about 20 miles south of Winston-Salem, has a 24-hour lockdown, no TVs or newspapers, and the walls are painted pink as a way to symbolically emasculate inmates. A photograph on the sheriff's Web site shows the him wielding a pistol-grip, double-barreled shotgun. |
