Utah Co. Approves Use of Pepperball Guns at Jail
By Associated Press
Published: 06/19/2003

The Utah County Commission has approved use of Pepperball guns to breakup fights and control unruly inmates in the county jail.
The Pepperball is hard plastic sphere that is fired from a high-pressure air gun. The balls burst on contact and are filled with a pepper-based irritant.
Sheriff's Capt. John Carlson, who oversees the jail, said the facility averages about one situation a month in which it could use Pepperballs.
The county's new policy regarding the Pepperballs restricts their use to situations in which an inmate or suspect displays violent or potentially violent behavior that threatens others' safety. It can only be used as a last resort, when officers' attempts to stop the behavior by other means haven't worked or would mean an undue risk to others.
