Warden Warren Cornell, who has headed the Charlotte Correctional Institution since 1997, resigned today, less than two weeks after an officer was killed during a botched escape attempt. Darla Kay Lathrem, 38, was killed June 11. Authorities say Lathrem, armed with only a radio and pepper spray, was supervising a five-man work crew alone when she was brutally attacked by inmates who had access to hammers and other tools. 'Clearly, according to our policy there should have been two correctional officers supervising the work squad the night of Officer Lathrem's death ' Department of Corrections Secretary James Crosby Jr. said in a prepared statement. Crosby said Don Gladish will immediately take over Charlotte Correctional. Gladish is a 27-year corrections veteran who started his career with the department as an officer at Florida State Prison in 1976. He has been warden at Marion Correctional since September 2000. Lathrem is the first female corrections officer killed in Florida history, and the first prison officer slain on duty in 16 years. Hundreds turned out for her funeral in Fort Myers on Tuesday. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating her death and that of Charlie Fuston, an inmate who also was killed. Family members said Fuston died while trying to protect her. Lathrem's body was found in a locked closest inside a prison building. None of the prisoners escaped. All of them have been transferred to other prisons. Cornell had been with the Department of Corrections for 32 years. He could not be reached for comment. |
