Wis. Escaped Convict Turns Himself In
By Associated Press
Published: 06/24/2003

A man who escaped from a minimum security prison almost five years ago has turned himself in.
Craig Baumler escaped from the Oakhill Correctional Institution on Aug. 13, 1998, while serving convictions for burglary and theft.
The prison didn't have a fence at the time, allowing him to just walk away.
The convict turned himself in at a prison in Waupun on Thursday night, said Bill Clausius, a spokesman for the Department of Corrections. Baumler told officials he escaped when his father died and was living in Tennessee under his brother's name.
'He indicated he became a Christian and felt he needed to turn himself in,' Clausius said.
If Baumler remained in prison, his mandatory release date would have been May 17, 2001. If prosecuted for escape, he could face a maximum prison term of five years, Clausius said.
He remained in prison Friday.
