Two inmates were wounded in a jailyard disturbance at Stony Mountain Institution in Winnipeg, the assistant warden said Sunday. About 100 inmates were in the exercise yard at the medium-security prison when a fight broke out between several inmates at 2:30 p.m., said Linda Garwood-Filbert. Officers fired warning shots when they could not get the inmates under control. The prison, which is 25 kilometers north of Winnipeg, was placed under lockdown after the incident. It will not be lifted until prison and RCMP investigations are complete, said Garwood-Filbert. 'We'll only open when it is safe to do so,' she said. 'Right now we are gathering evidence.' One inmate was taken to the penitentiary's hospital, while another was sent to an outside hospital. Several others received minor injuries. |
