A state prison escapee was back in custody June 24 after a seven-hour standoff with police.
William Gene Snowden, 38, was arrested inside a southeast Oklahoma City house about 3 a.m., Sgt. Charles Phillips said. Snowden had been missing since April when he escaped from the Carver Center, a halfway house in Oklahoma City.
Snowden was discovered at the house shortly before 8 p.m. June 23 by officers acting on a tip, Phillips said. He barricaded himself in the house when officers arrived, said Phillips.
'Officers tried numerous times to get Snowden to talk to them and surrender, but he refused to speak to officers at all,' Phillips said. 'While all this is taking place, there is a pit bull that tries to attack one of the officers, and the officer was forced to shoot and kill the dog.'
Police entered the house about 3 a.m. and found Snowden trying to hide in a freezer.
'He fought with the officers, who then used Taser on him,' Phillips said.
Snowden was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, where he was treated and released. Officers then booked him into the Oklahoma County jail on escape and other charges.
Snowden also was wanted by Oklahoma City police on complaints of destruction of private property and interference with an officer.
