The warden selected to lead Charlotte Correctional Institution after an officer and an inmate were killed there has turned down the post for personal reasons. Don Gladish will return to Marion Correctional Institution, where he has served as warden for nearly three years. 'Mr. Gladish asked to be moved back to Marion for personal reasons involving his family,' state Department of Corrections spokesman Sterling Ivey said June 24. He declined to elaborate. Department of Corrections Secretary James Crosby Jr. appointed Chester Lambdin as the interim warden on the afternoon of June 24. Lambdin, 61, who has worked for the department since 1965, last served as warden of Okeechobee Correctional Institution. Warren Cornell, who was Charlotte's warden during the June 11 killings, resigned June 19 as the state corrections department acknowledged that proper policy was not followed the night officer Darla Lathrem was attacked and killed while supervising a five-inmate work crew. Two inmates also were injured, and one of them later died. Lathrem was alone and armed only with a radio and pepper spray. Crosby said last week that two officers should have been monitoring the work crew. |
