An inmate in the Greenville (Miss.) City Jail is recovering from a gunshot wound after he was shot Wednesday. Charles Martin, 21, of Greenville was being held at the jail on charges of burglary and breaking his probation when he was shot in his right calf. 'It is not known at this point in time who shot the inmate or if the inmate shot himself,' said Police Chief Lon Pepper. 'The entire matter will be investigated and we will get to the bottom of it.' Pepper said the small Derringer pistol that was found could easily be hidden in the palm of one hand. 'I know of a couple occasions where a weapon has been introduced - either on an inmate or a package given to an inmate,' he said. Pepper said officials at the jail conduct searches and restrict inmate movements to prevent such situations, but that it's nearly impossible to keep weapons out when inmates are determined to bring them in. |
