Three inmates who escaped from a Winnipeg youth jail on Sunday are still at large. The Manitoba Youth Centre remained in lockdown mode Monday as an internal review began into the escape. Superintendent Darryl Rumsey says the centre's 130 inmates are being confined to their cells while officials conduct interviews and review security measures. Police say the three escapees are considered violent. The teens were cleaning up after lunch Sunday when they allegedly assaulted a 42-year-old cook and escaped through a cafeteria door with his key. One of the 16-year-olds who escaped was sentenced on Friday to six months in custody for break-and-enter charges. The other 16-year-old and a 15-year-old are facing robbery and theft-related charges. The centre is looking at how it screens inmates to decide if they can work in the kitchen and what utensils they have access to. Rumsey says they are also looking at which staff members should have keys. |
