Texas Man Executed for Killing of Boy

A man was executed July 2 for abducting and killing the 12-year-old son of longtime friends in an apparent scheme to obtain ransom money to pay off his debts.
Hilton Crawford apologized and asked for forgiveness from the boy's mother, who witnessed the execution. He was pronounced dead at 6:19 p.m. after an injection.
The boy, McKay Everett, knew Crawford as 'Uncle Hilty,' a longtime family friend who gave him gifts such as a football a few weeks before his 1995 abduction.
'Justice is now complete,' the boy's mother, Paulette Everett-Norman, said.
A former Beaumont police officer and sheriff's deputy, Crawford acknowledged being present when the boy was fatally beaten and shot but insisted the killer was a man he met at a race track. Prosecutors said Crawford fabricated the accomplice.
The boy was snatched from his home in Conroe, north of Houston, the night of Sept. 12, 1995, while his parents were at a meeting. They later received a ransom demand for $500,000.
The investigation led to Crawford, who was facing huge credit card and gambling debts. The boy's remains were found Sept. 17 after Crawford drew for investigators a map of a gravel road off Interstate 10 in a south Louisiana swamp.
Crawford was the 17th inmate executed this year in Texas, the nation's most active death penalty state. Seven more executions are scheduled through August.
