The mother of a jail inmate has sued Los Angeles County for allegedly withholding her son's blood pressure medicine and allowing him to die. Mariano Avenar Maradiaga, a 39-year-old Mexican native, was booked into the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles a year ago Monday, according to the Los Angeles Superior Court wrongful death suit. According to the lawsuit, Maradiaga told a Sheriff's Department deputy and a doctor that he had hypertension and needed the medication daily and had vomited blood twice in the days before going to jail. 'Despite their knowledge of (Maradiaga's) dangerously high blood pressure and repeated requests to be allowed to take his medication, the defendants ... intentionally deprived (him) of medical care and treatment,' according to the suit filed on behalf of the inmate's mother, Rosa Ordaz. The suit alleges the defendants' actions were 'motivated by hatred and prejudice against Mexican-Americans.' Maradiaga died last July 2, according to the lawsuit. Assistant County Counsel Gary N. Miller did not immediately return a call for comment on the allegations. Ordaz seeks unspecified monetary damages for loss of love, companionship, comfort, affection, society and solace, as well as attorney fees. The plaintiff also wants the county to pay a $25,000 civil penalty. |
