A Kentucky State Reformatory prisoner convicted of murder and kidnapping walked out of the prison by telling a corrections officer he was supposed to perform some work outside a perimeter gate, officials said. Oldham County police captured Elisha Branham, 45, of Floyd County, before prison officials knew he was missing July 1, said Lisa Lamb, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections. Branham was assigned to telephone and cable maintenance work detail inside the prison. He told a corrections officer he was supposed to work on a phone in a building outside a perimeter gate about 11 a.m., Lamb said. Police called prison officials at 12:45 p.m. to tell them the inmate had been in a wreck in a stolen van near Skylight, just a few miles away, Lamb said. The corrections officer who let Branham out, a 17-year sergeant whom Lamb wouldn't name, has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the department, Lamb said. She said the incident appeared to be a matter of human error. Branham was convicted in Floyd County in the 1981 kidnapping and murder of Michael Dwayne Kline, a service station attendant in Allen, Ky. He was serving two life sentences plus 20 years for robbery. He was up for parole in August 2007, although he'd been turned down twice before. After Branham walked off the prison grounds, he walked to a nearby Buckner business, Tower Supply Inc. That's where Oldham Resident Roger Billings had parked his van and gone inside to buy electrical supplies, said Oldham County police Detective Kevin Nuss. When Billings came back outside, his van was gone. |
