Authorities Investigate Pa. Prison Extortion Ring
By WGAL
Published: 07/14/2003

The FBI, Northumberland County, Pa., detectives and local police are investigating what the warden calls an extortion ring operating in the Northumberland County Prison.
Warden Ralph Reish says he can't cite specifics of the case because he doesn't want to further endanger the victims. He does say it involves a letter-writing campaign in which people were coerced to pay money to keep a family member or loved one from being beaten.
The warden says he believes the operation had been an ongoing problem and he began an investigation after inmates brought it to his attention. He also says he is conducting his own internal investigation to determine if prison staff were involved or knew of the problem and failed to report it.
