Mistakenly Released Inmate Surrenders

A man who was mistakenly released from a West Tennessee prison on July 1 has surrendered to authorities in California.
Alex M. Rowell, 26, turned himself in to officers in Yuba, Calif., early Saturday, according to Capt. John Huffine, the Greene County Sheriff's Department's chief detective.
Huffine said yesterday that Rowell had phoned the Greene County Sheriff's Department from California late Friday and had stated that he understood the department had been looking for him.
'He was told to contact (and surrender to) local authorities in California,' Huffine said. The chief detective said Tennessee Department of Correction personnel will travel to California to pick up Rowell.
Greeneville Police Department Det. Sgt. Stewart Kilgore said he had been informed late Friday afternoon by a member of Rowell's family that Rowell was in California. Kilgore said he advised the family member to tell Rowell to surrender to California authorities.
Kilgore said he also notified the Yuba County, Calif., Sheriff's Department of the address where Rowell was believed to be living with relatives in California.
After Rowell's family members here spoke with him by telephone, Kilgore said, Rowell apparently decided to turn himself in to California authorities.
Rowell had been sentenced to 12 years in prison by Judge James E. Beckner in April after pleading guilty to the aggravated robberies of three Greeneville and Greene County fast-food restaurants last fall.
But he was mistakenly released from prison on July 1 because his 12-year sentence, through an error, was never logged into the Tennessee Department of Correction's computer system, a TDOC spokesman said.
As a result, Rowell was released from prison when he completed a previous sentence for which he had been on parole at the time the fast-food restaurant robberies were committed here last year, according to the TDOC.
