Calif. Judge Pooh-Poohs Defecating Defendant's Insanity Plea

A San Diego jail inmate who defecated in a crowded courtroom last month is mentally competent to stand trial on 12 bank robbery counts, a judge ruled June 23.
Criminal proceedings were reinstated for Charles Fowler Jr., 30, whose hands were shackled in front of him during his latest court appearance.
During a May 22 court appearance, Fowler pulled his pants down and defecated about 10 feet from the judge.
Judge Howard Shore scheduled a preliminary hearing for July 7 after he reviewed a psychologist's finding that Fowler understands the charges against him and could assist his attorney at trial.
