A new report calls for hundreds of millions of dollars in state prison funding to comply with federal standards. The draft report out from private consultants for the state calls for immediate spending of $300 million dollars to build, repair and maintain Hawaii prisons. And it says the state should spend another $500 million dollars over the next ten years to replace all state run community correctional centers. That's according to state Senators Brian Taniguchi and Colleen Hanabusa, who've been briefed on the report. The senators say if the state doesn't act on the recommendations, it could be found in violation of federal prison standards. Governor Lingle has declined to comment on the report until it's final, but called its draft quote, "sobering." |
