Police arrested a man in Jacksonville July 3 who escaped from a North Carolina prison 36 years ago.
Joel Lee Saye went by the name Allen Lawrence in Jacksonville, as he lived a normal life despite being a fugitive.
'He had a Social Security card issued in that name from 1967 when he did escape so he's assumed that identity this whole time,' Lt. Randy Parmer told Channel 4's Karen Guglielmoni.
Police said 65-year-old Saye was sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape and burglary in February 1962. He escaped from the Department of Corrections in Mecklenburg, N.C., in November of 1967.
Police arrested Saye at a traffic stop after they received an anonymous tip about his true identity.
'It just goes to show that wherever you are, whatever you do, sooner or later it can catch up to you,' Parmer said.
Karen went to Saye's house and visited his wife. She knew nothing about the arrest or her husband's history.
Saye called his wife from the jail while Karen was there, and after that phone call his wife said she was too emotional to talk to Karen.
Saye's co-workers were also shocked by this news.
'I can't believe it. I've known this guy, he had nothing but the utmost integrity in my book,' co-worker Keith Parette said.
Though no one seemed to know Joel Lee Saye's real identity, he did not leave his old name behind completely. His home is built on Joel Lee Road.
