An Indiana man released from prison because of a serious medical condition may be headed back behind bars. Joseph Nowicki was released from a federal medical detention center in Missouri July 2 where he was being held on charges unrelated to the disappearance of Brookley Louks. A judge ordered Nowicki's release to allow him to die in his Greenwood-area home, WRTV reported. Nowicki has throat cancer and reportedly only has days to live. But Indiana authorities want to recall an arrest warrant that would send Nowicki back to jail. A hearing on the issue was scheduled for July 3. Police have focused on Nowicki as the man likely responsible for Louks' disappearance last summer. Investigators believe the 19-year-old woman was murdered, although her body has never been found. Police in September said drops of what they believed to be Louks' blood were found on Nowicki's property. The blood was found during a search July 17, 2002, police said. Louks used to do errands for Nowicki, who was a friend of her father. Nowicki has denied involvement in the disappearance. WRTV reported last week that Nowicki recently hinted in a letter to authorities that he has information that could help the probe. WRTV reported Nowicki wrote the following: 'If I were to tell you all I know right now, then your case would be cleared up.' WRTV learned of the letter through a source on condition that the source not be identified. |
