Operations have returned to normal at three Colorado state prisons after inmate protests over reduced stipends. Several dozen inmates in Trinidad, Sterling and Arkansas Valley prisons were punished after they stopped working to protest the decreased pay. Sterling prison officials imposed a lockdown earlier this month on 1,100 inmates after 60 of them refused to work in the kitchen. They were protesting stipend reductions of up to 70 percent prompted by statewide budget cuts. Inmates earned an average of 85 cents a day for various prison jobs before July First. The new scale pays all inmates 60 cents a day. Those who don't work get a daily stipend of 23 cents a day. The money helps pay for personal hygiene items, restitution and child support. |
