Nearly 100 Inmates Hold Hunger Strike

A hunger strike at L.A.'s Men's Central Jail led to restrictions in privileges for dozens of inmates.
Inmates were denied visits and telephone calls last weekend after nearly 100 prisoners refused meals to protest conditions at the county's largest jail facility, relatives and Orange County sheriff's officials said Monday.
Inmates began the demonstration July 8 and vowed to continue until they could speak to a jail manager, sheriff's spokesman Jon Fleischman said. An inmate leader met with a sergeant after prisoners filled out grievance forms, and all prisoners had resumed eating by Thursday.
Jail officials found that some inmates were coerced into participating by stronger inmates, Fleischman said.
