An inmate died Wednesday after he escaped from jail in Orleans Parish, led police on a high-speed chase across town and then shot himself in a parking lot. The man, Lance Davis, 30, was pronounced dead at the Discount Zone gas station and convenience store on Veterans Boulevard. His wife and alleged accomplice, Lori Davis, 31, was being questioned by police. According to investigators, Davis' escape from Orleans Parish Prison was aided by his wife, who came to visit him on crutches and encased in a full body brace in which she had hidden bolt cutters, handcuff keys, and a gun. Lori Davis walked in to the jail through an entrance for the handicapped. She was able to get past security alarms, blaming the metal in her brace for setting them off, police said. Once inside the visitation area, the couple used the bolt cutters to break through the security screen and Lance Davis escaped to his wife's green Dodge. The couple led police through two parishes, hitting several cars along the way, police said. They ended up in the parking lot of the Metairie gas station and store, where Davis fled inside and shot himself, police said. Lori Davis faces charges of assisting an escape and conspiracy to commit a felony. |
