A lawsuit by a former inmate at a state youth corrections center claims she and other women were raped by officers and forced to take birth control pills so they wouldn't get pregnant. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court by Angel Castro names 11 current or former employees of a youth prison in Pueblo. Two of the defendants, Steve Chavez and Gary Neal, pleaded guilty last year to sexual misconduct in a penal institution and were sentenced to 18 months in prison. Colorado Department of Corrections spokeswoman Alison Morgan declined to comment. Castro's lawsuit claims her constitutional rights were violated. She accuses Chavez of raping her in July 2001,when she was 17. Castro claims other corrections officers and supervisors did nothing to stop sexual assaults and harassment or the sexual relationships between male and female officers and youths. She said center director Brian Gomez threatened to have her sent to an adult prison after she reported the rape, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit also claims that employees were not properly screened before they were hired and weren't properly trained. The prison, on the grounds of the Colorado Mental Health Institute, is run by the state corrections agency. |
