An East Texas inmate who jumped from the roof of a three-story jail found his freedom was short-lived because of injuries suffered in the fall. Sheriff's deputies said Christopher Whittemore escaped last Tuesday afternoon from the Smith County Jail with the help of other prisoners. An inmate not involved in the escape notified authorities after the 3 p.m. breakout. Deputies and Tyler police checked downtown streets for the 38-year-old Whittemore, who had been jailed on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child and revocation of probation. He didn't get very far. About one hour later, a search dog picked up his scent. He was found only a block from the jail, hiding inside a wall of heavy shrubbery, next to railroad tracks. Whittemore was pulled from the brush on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to Tyler hospital. He had been bitten by the dog and complained of back pain, authorities said. Sheriff J.B. Smith said his back was broken in three places. |
