A convicted felon serving time in prison for attempted capital murder now faces charges in connection with the 1994 robbery and fatal shooting of a Haltom City, Texas, man outside a Fort Worth apartment complex. Alphonzo Barefield, 28, recently confessed to police that he stole the wallet of Richard Barines, then fatally shot the 25-year-old man in the parking lot of the Monaco Apartments, 5233 Greenlee St., on May 20, 1994, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Police obtained a capital murder warrant against Barefield, also known as Alphoanzo Barefield, on Monday. He is currently incarcerated at the Allred Unit of the Texas Department of Corrections in Iowa Park. Homicide Sgt. J.D. Thornton said Barefield surfaced as a witness in the case -- and later as a suspect -- in 1994, but 'there was insufficient evidence at that time to make an arrest or to charge him.' The case was reassigned to homicide Detective John McCaskill in January, part of the Police Department's efforts to reinvestigate unsolved slayings from previous years. It is the 10th cold case cleared this year. Thornton said McCaskill reinterviewed witnesses and also found new ones, including one man who resides in Minnesota. 'All the information obtained from all the witnesses pointed at Barefield as being the shooter,' Thornton said. Thornton said there is no evidence that Barefield knew Barines. 'We believe that the victim was lured to the apartment by a female friend of Barefield," Thornton said. Thornton said the woman waited nearby as Barefield approached Barines in the parking lot to rob him. The woman has since died, Thornton said. When later questioned by detectives, Barefield said he obtained the 9 mm handgun used to shoot Barines from the apartment of an acquaintance, the affidavit stated. Court records show that in 1998 Barefield was sentenced to 30 years for attempted capital murder stemming from a 1995 carjacking and 20 years in prison for robbery by threat. The sentences are running concurrently. Police are still investigating whether another man may have also been involved in the robbery and shooting. |
