Florida authorities have arrested a Charlotte native who escaped from the state prison in Catawba County in 1967, N.C. prison officials said Wednesday. The time the man had been at-large was among the longest for any N.C. prison escapee brought back into custody, state prison officials said. Sheriff's officers in Jacksonville, Fla., arrested Joel Lee Saye on July 3 after N.C. prison officials received a telephoned tip that he was living there, said Keith Acree, a N.C. Department of Correction spokesman. The officials wouldn't reveal the name of the tipster, saying they want to protect the person. Prison officials will extradite Saye to North Carolina. Saye, 64, had been living in Jacksonville under the assumed name of Allen Lawrence, Acree said. When he escaped Catawba's prison on the night of Nov. 27, 1967, he was 28. Prison records show that he scaled a back fence of the minimum-security prison at about 10:30 p.m. The records give no other details. Saye had served 5 1/2 years of a 20-year sentence at the time of his escape. He was convicted on Feb. 20, 1962, in Mecklenburg County for crimes committed in 1961 and 1962: second-degree burglary, breaking and entering, and assault with intent to commit rape. N.C. prison officials plan to bring Saye back to North Carolina in the next two weeks, and will decide whether to charge him in connection with the escape, Acree said. Since Saye was eligible for parole at the time of his escape, the state Parole Commission will decide whether he'll serve the remainder of his original sentence. |
