State officials say a growing methamphetamine problem led to a second straight year of record prison admissions in 2003. The Iowa Department of Corrections said drug offenses are the fastest growing type of conviction in Iowa. Department officials said about 60 percent of drug convictions have been meth-related in the last few years. The number of inmates in prison on drug offenses has jumped 194 percent since 1992. Officials said Iowa's nine major prisons are holding more inmates than their 6,800-person design capacity. According to numbers released Thursday, the prisons held about 8,300 inmates for the 12 months ending June 30, which officials said is 123 percent of capacity. |
