Additional safeguards will be put in place after another inmate was mistakenly released from the Madison County Jail, Sheriff Robert Hertz said. 'I'm beginning to think additional guidance is needed,' he said. Hertz said he will have two people going through the checks to be followed when prisoners are being released. 'It's a case of who checks the checker,' he said. The most recent error occurred when inmate Benjamin Browning, 43, of Edwardsville, was released Sunday night, but Browning was located at his home and taken back into custody, Hertz said. He made bond on minor local charges and charges out of Coles County, but there was a hold in his file from the U.S. Marshal's Office, Hertz said. The deputy who released Browning failed to check the file, so the hold order was not discovered. The U.S. Marshal's Office called Monday to check on Browning's status, and the hold was then discovered, Hertz said. Browning was then re-arrested at his home. The Browning case comes less than two weeks after a Collinsville man, Albert Corey Hunter, was mistakenly let out of the jail. Hunter is still at large. |
