The South Carolina Department of Mental Health's director says an administrative mistake caused more than 70 mentally ill people to wait in jails for court-ordered treatment. Director George Gintoli had previously placed the blame on budget cuts. Gintoli and other Mental Health officials had told the public, advocates and a circuit court judge that budget cuts were the reason the department was unable to admit the mentally ill inmates to its forensic unit. But in an interview with The Charlotte Observer, Gintoli says the forensic unit was full because Mental Health staff failed to release patients who were ready to be discharged. A circuit court judge held the department and Gintoli in contempt for more than four months last year. But the judge lifted the contempt order after DMH reduced the waiting list, which is now down to four. |
