Officer Dies in Head-on Crash Near Livingston

A Texas prison officer died in a head-on collision today while helping another officer transport a condemned inmate to death row, a prison spokeswoman said.
John Bennett, 40, was pronounced dead at a Polk County hospital about two hours after the accident on U.S. Highway 190 west of the Polunsky Unit in Livingston, said Michelle Lyons, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Bennett was a passenger in a prison system van driven by Steven Gardner, 45, as they delivered convicted ice-pick killer Danny Bible, 51, to death row. Gardner was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he was listed in good condition and likely to be released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Bible was in stable condition at a Polk County hospital.
Lyons said the van was eastbound behind a refrigerated truck on the two-lane highway when a westbound pickup truck driven by a woman veered into the eastbound lane. The pickup truck hit the back end of the refrigerated truck and then the van head-on, Lyons said.
The woman driving the pickup, whose identity wasn't released, also was killed, Lyons said.
Bible was condemned to death last month for the 1979 rape and ice pick stabbing death of a north Houston woman who was his cousin's best friend. He already had served eight years in prison for the 1984 slaying of a Weatherford, Texas woman.
