Female Inmates at New N.M. Jail Get Shower Privacy

Female prisoners at Albuquerque's new metropolitan jail will now have more privacy when they shower.
The city and Bernalillo County officials recently settled a lawsuit brought by a female inmate.
The woman claimed that people working in the new jail near one of the women's pods were able to see into the shower area.
Under the settlement, men are not allowed into the area without an announcement that gives anyone using the showers the chance to get dressed.
Before, people who had business in the jail were allowed to be in the pod unannounced.
Also under the settlement, anyone entering the pod area must sign a log and state the reason they need to be there.
The city and county also paid $5,000 in attorney's fees as part of the settlement.
