A man who robbed and shot a gun dealer, one of four slayings linked to him during a 17-day spree in 1991, was executed Wednesday in Texas. Cedric Ransom, 29, thanked a friend and spiritual adviser who were present to watch him die. As the lethal drugs began taking effect, he told them, 'I'll be OK.' Lori Primm, whose husband was slain in the attack outside their home, said after watching Ransom die she was disappointed he didn't acknowledge her, but didn't expect any more from the inmate. Ransom was executed after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal, which contended he was mentally retarded. In 1991, Ransom and three companions went to the house of part-time gun dealer Herbert Primm to look at some guns. Primm opened the trunk of his car and the four pulled out their own weapons, according to testimony. Primm told the gun thieves to 'just take them,' but Ransom shot him in the head, according to testimony. He was arrested three days later. His three accomplices are serving terms of at least 20 years. During his trial, Ransom used a smuggled piece of broken glass to try to stab one of his attorneys and a prosecutor in the back. Neither was seriously hurt. Ransom's death sentence was overturned in 1994. He was given the same penalty at a second sentencing trial. |
