New Hampshire corrections officials have announced a long list of changes to tighten security after three inmates cut through two fences last month with tools they signed out from the prison. Corrections Commissioner Phil Stanley says the prison's building trades area -- from which the men escaped -- will be dismantled. Other inmate programs have been cut back until the prison analyzes inmate assignments and tool control. In addition, Stanley says the prison will complete installing video cameras around the fences, search inmates more as they move through the prison and look into erecting more fences. Some improvements already are underway, and Stanley says he hopes all will be completed by the end of the year. The state prison had video cameras but had not installed them when the inmates escaped. The attorney general also reported the prison ignored information about an imminent escape and allowed inmates who had been flagged as escape risks to work with cutting tool near the fences. The escapees were caught the following day in Massachusetts. |
